Kanye West - Power

Don't you hate it when someone says "I wish the song was longer"?

I finally had a chance to listen to Kanye West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, and while listening to the track "Power", I thought to myself, here's a song that I think works better as a 1:42 track. The hook (and sampled vocals) are so strong that the lyrics in the verses become inconsequential. Having the track at this length also allows spares us from listening to that unfortunate "abomination of Obama's nation" rhyme.

The video for this song has also spoiled me. It's so powerful (pun) that listening to this track in its audio only form seems a little underwhelming to me.

I'm gonna delete it from my ipod, and just watch the video version whenever I want to hear the song.

Summer Wars (Mamoru Hosoda, 2009)

The Proposal + The Celebration + Tron + Scott Pilgrim + War Games = Summer Wars?

I found a little something from all of those films contained in Hosoda's followup to his 2006 release, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. (a title I enjoyed very much)

I thought this was a solid film, though a little convoluted at times. There's some interesting animation here, especially the sequences which take place within the online world. The story deals with the importance of family (in this case a very large one), and touches on the perils of an over-reliance on technology.

I've seen and heard Miyazaki's name brought up in discussions about Hosoda, which I'm sure must flatter him. It seems like a lot of pressure though, and I hope the comparisons don't detract from the solid work he's done so far. Definitely someone to keep an eye out for in the future.

A (Very) Brief Conversation: L.A. Jay

John Barnes III aka L.A. Jay recently joined Philaflava's message board, where he answered some questions regarding production credits on tracks by The Pharcyde. Shameless fan that I am, I decided to hit up Mr. Barnes on twitter with a few questions of my own.

I had questions regarding the Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde chapter in Brian Coleman's excellent book Check The Technique: Liner Notes For Hip Hop Junkies -- which I'm certain we've all read.

When discussing the track Otha Fish, Slim Kid Tre mentions that the version included on the album (produced by L.A. Jay & Tre) was not the original version recorded. The original version was produced by M-Love; a friend of the group. I asked Jay if he could recall the original track. He sent me a link to this track...

The Pharcyde - Otha Fish (The Heavy-Head O.G. Mix)

I have this version!

I've had it for years as an owner of the Otha Fish CDS. I guess the "O.G." in the title was referring to recording history, and not, errr...original gangsters. Was a little disappointed as I hoping to unearth a gem. Of the mixes included on the single, this was always my least favorite. What Jay and Tre did with the Herbie Mann sample was perfect, and I believe we all can agree that the sentiment in the lyrics was better conveyed on the final album version.

L.A. Jay - "yeah, he went into the zone over my beat. the tempo change let his verse breathe more, accentuating the emotion in the lyrics."

Another track discussed in Brian Coleman's book was "My Man". Described as "Funny, daffy, and just amazing", deadlines and infighting prevented this track from being completed and included on the album. I asked Jay about it, but he didn't seem to remember it. Not all that surprising since it was recorded almost 20 years ago.

"I'm sure I heard it way back then...I'll ask Tre about it."

And there you have it. Wasn't able to turn up anything (yet) as far as demos are concerned, but the Otha Fish trivia was great as I'm very appreciative of any information concerning the recording of this album.

Shout out to L.A. Jay for responding to my tweets, and for producing some great tracks for The Pharcyde. Follow him on twitter @john_the_third

I Wish De La Soul Still Made Tracks Like This: Eye Know (The Kiss Mix)

De La Soul - Eye Know (The Kiss Mix)

Hip Hop's aural representation of an adolescent crush.

What I love about this remix is that they keep the original lyrics (quite endearing), flip a new beat (which is still on the light side), but add in sexual moaning to dirty up the track a bit.

It gets really fun towards the end of the track, as the sounds keep repeating over the beat, finally ending when the music stops and the full orgasmic sample is heard.

Sock Game

The spotlight you so craved is shining, but so far your performance on the court has been average at best. That championship you also covet, I hope it comes your way because you're at serious risk of becoming a forgotten man -- the third wheel to a couple of superstars.

This Is Hollywood Running Out Of Ideas

hmmm...which waify white woman romantic comedy should I see next?

Post Update:

Apparently network television is also out of ideas. Coming soon to NBC...

Friends With Benefits: Trailer

Larry David brilliantly wrote about this matter almost 20 years ago on the Seinfeld episode "The Deal". A lot more classy than what I'm seeing in these projects.
