Bonita Applebum (UK 12" Mix)

I almost gave up on my search to find this song. I was ready to concede that it was only a figment of my imagination, but the magic of the internet has brought it to me.

The first (and only) time I heard it on the radio, was probably some time in the early 90s. Saturday afternoon sit-ins, listening to the Powermove Show with DJX. I was half asleep when it came on, and probably didn't record it because it sounds very similar to the album version, but with an extended intro.

The midpoint of the song got my attention. I expected it to end, but in comes a Grace Jones sample, some fucking noises, and then some loud drums. All of a sudden the lyrics from the Hootie Remix comes in, and the song continues.

I thought it was the dopest shit ever, but unfortunately, I was too lazy to hit the record button. I fell asleep soon thereafter, and I never heard this remix again...until today.

Thanks to John Book, for flexing his Google skills.

Generation Kill

We all love David Simon and Ed Burns, right?

I wonder why their excellent mini series Generation Kill didn't get a lot more love.

War fatigue?

Not as cool as watching dem boyz in the hood?

It's not The Wire, but it's still a damn good series.

Check it out if you get the opportunity.

Area 5 Presents: CO-OP

Much to the delight of myself and others, the producers who brought us The 1UP Show, have returned with their new series CO-OP.

Make sure you check out their site for more information on the show and its availability.

"All of our friends come by to talk about the games they loved from 2008. We don’t pick a winner, we just let everyone chime in on what drew them in and what kept them coming back for more. Who, you may ask, were kind enough to lend us their big brains and their precious time? John Davison, Dan Hsu, Shane Bettenhausen, Greg Ford, Michael Donahoe, Giancarlo Varanini, Nick Suttner, Anthony Gallegos, Philip Kollar, Demian Linn, Andrew Fitch, Ryan Scott and then, of course, those Area 5 jerks. Cesar, Jason, and Rob did all of the shooting with the old cameras and JayFresh held a stick mic out there to capture sound. We live on a busy street so apologies for all the traffic sounds trying to drown us out."

Goodbye George Bush, Hello Barack Obama

"I know it's a trend for people to Bush bash" - Common

One of the worst things (pop culture wise)that emerged from the Bush era, was the proliferation of the anti-Bush song. I know we all hated the man, but it started to get a little tiring. Especially when there were other unexplored topics to talk about...like love...riches...or the bitches.

Today, Barack Obama was inaugurated as the 44th President of the United States of America. With him he brings hope, a chance for change, and the inspiration for artists to write more bad songs.

The pro-Obama song. It's the new anti-Bush; and just as terrible.

Will.I.Am was on Oprah yesterday to debut his new song titled "America's Song". If you liked that Yes We Can song, you'll LOVE this one.

Jay-Z has written a verse for Jeezy's track My President is Black, which he performed live recently. Needless to say the crowd ate it up (check the video below). Honestly, it made my eyes roll.

I shudder at the thought of all the musicians currently in the studio writing bad Obama tunes.

Jay-Z My President is black Remix LIVE 1-18-09 from pleasedontstare on Vimeo.

my president is black, in fact, he's half white
so even in a racist's mind, he's half right
if you got a racist mind, it's alright
my president is black but his house is all white
rosa parks sat so martin luther could walk
martin luther walked so barack obama could run
barack obama ran so all the children could fly
so i'ma spread my wings, you can meet me in the sky
i already got my own clothes, already got my own shoes
i was hot before barack, imagine what i'm gon do
hello miss america, hey, pretty lady
red, white and blue flag, wave for me, baby
never thought i'd say this shit: baby, i'm good
you can keep your puss, i don't want no more Bush
no more war, no more iraq
no more white lies, my president is black

Flower

Yup, that's it.

There doesn't seem to be much more to it.

That said, I'm really looking forward to it.

No Homo

I've never heard anyone utter these words in public, but it's something I see quite often on message boards and blogs. I always thought it was a bit silly to see people constantly needing to declare their sexuality, when for the most part it has absolutely nothing to do with the conversation at hand.

Seems I'm not alone in my thinking. Originally aired in 2007, Addicted To Race host Carmen Van Kerckhove and guest host L’Heureux "Dumi" Lewis, discuss the No Homo phenomenon, and its effects on the black community.

1UP/EGM

A week ago today, I came home to the terrible news of UGO/Hearst Corporation's acquisition of 1UP.com and EGM Magazine.

EGM was closed and several features from 1UP.com were either cancelled, or put on hiatus. This of course resulted in the loss of many jobs, including some of the best gaming journalists...well, on the planet.

Let's just say I did not take this news well, and lost a lot of sleep that night. Many others shared similar feelings of disbelief and outrage, as gaming message boards across the internet exploded with threads discussing the news.

There is some good news though. Many of the employees layed off have returned with independent podcasts.

The former hosts of 1UP FM, are now producing the Rebel FM podcast (currently the #2 ranked podcast in Canada, and #6 in the US). More information on the podcast can be found here www.eat-sleep-game.com

The producers formerly of the 1UP Show will also be returning with a new show. Details will be coming soon, but in the meantime, you can check for updates here http://talkingorange.com/

I'm still a little worried about the future of the 1UP Yours Podcast. News regarding this particular podcast has been slow, and arguably the largest personality from the show, Mr. Shane Bettenhausen resigned from 1UP after it was acquired by UGO. Losing Shane would be devastating, and I'm hoping that he'll be able to continue as a special guest.

Though the changes have scattered my favorite journalists, I'm sure they'll be fine, as they are all very talented individuals. It's just disappointing that they won't all be gathered in the same offices anymore. They were a very special group.

I wish them all the best of luck in the future.

2009

No resolutions worth mentioning for 2009.

What I really need to do is get a job.

I just purchased one of these, and let me tell you it wasn't cheap.

More importantly, I think it's time for me to get my life back on track.
